President Reagan watches the testimony of former Assistant for National Security Affairs Robert McFarlane before the Senate on the Iran-Contra affair on television.
President Reagan travels to Camp David for the weekend.
Into the office for usual meetings. Then a meeting with Sen. Packwood. We have a difference, he wants a former staffer of his, now on the F.C.C., to be chairman of F.C.C. I have decided on another member for the job. I’ve assured him that I’m looking for another high level job for his candidate. Watched Bud McFarlanes televised testimony before Sen. committee. He was masterful for more than 2 hours.
Off to Camp D. where most of the snow had melted but bad weather predicted. Polished off some phone calls before dinner. Ran “For Whom the Bell Tolls” & discovered I was seeing it for the 1st time.
