Held an MX meeting with Dem. & R. Sens. Consensus was we should go for a compromise they’ve worked out to appropriate money but fence it in until both houses can agree on a basing mode. Not good but best we can do. Lengthy meeting with R. leadership on MX—the gas tax & what we can do in this lame duck session. It turned out alright. Over to exec. bldg. to meet with about as high powered a group of business execs. it’s possible to get in one place. They are a vol. committee the “Nat. Security Telecommunications Advisory Comm.” Spent most of afternoon in a dismal ec. briefing about the deficits & the little chance we have of getting further budget cuts. Then on to Soc. Security. I’m afraid our bi-partisan commission has failed us. At 6:15 went to East room for photo with our Social Aides (Mil.). They are quite a group. At 8:30 the annual press reception—half of them. We’ll get the other half Thurs.
