Off to Nev. Calif. & Texas.—Pol. fund raisers Thurs. in Nev. & a Joffrey Ballet Thurs. nite in L.A. Fri. to S.D. for meeting with Pres. Elect of Mexico De La Madrid. Then to the Ranch for weekend & Mon. to Dallas for Repub. fundraiser—then to W.H. Nevada was great—the big rally was at the U. of Nev. Reno. I’m not used (after the 60’s) to having college students whooping it up for me. Thurs. nite the Joffrey ballet performed in open air at night—the Murdock’s home in BelAir. It was beautiful & they raised $1,700,000. Fri. to Long Beach for a public signing of the “Export” bill and a speech to a large crowd on the pier—many of them unemployed dock workers. Jesse Calhoun—Pres. of the Union is truly on our side. Then we flew to TiaJuana—met with Pres. elect de la Madrid at Del Coronado. We got along fine. I think he’ll be good for Mexico. Finally at 9:30 arrived at the Ranch—Nancy there to greet me. We rode Sat. then Ted Graber & Arch came up & we finished decorating the guest house. I finished the afternoon with Dennis & Barney hauling brush. Sun. Nancy had to leave for Wash. It’s the 1st time I’ve ever been at the ranch without her. I dont like it. In the afternoon we moved our “historical monument”—a non working outhouse—to a better location—then back to brush hauling. Down in L.A. County they were having fires again—20 homes & 40 trailers destroyed—about 20,000 acres of brush went up. Mon. to Dallas for Cong. Jim Collins—he & his wife are great people. There was a rally at his ranch for about 3000 people supporting his race for the Senate. This went well. Now I’m back in the W.H.
