Staff time, more planning for the Bork campaign. N.S.C.—what if we find Iran loading mines on ships. This is Q. being raised in Defense circles. I think we keep quiet but if evidence is solid we intercept those vessels or attack them in self defense.

Then 4 meetings with individual Sens.—Heinz, DeConcini, Exon & Stafford. None would commit but I feel we have reason to hope.

Then a dropby—Roosevelt room—farewell party for Elizabeth Dole—a nice affair. Met with Helms—he’s going to get out of way & allow Verity to be confirmed as Sec. of Commerce.

After lunch into the Rose Garden for signing ceremony of proclamation—Oct. 6 German American Day—Pres. of German Bundestag present. Then briefing & interview with Fred Barnes of “New Repub.”

And here we go to Camp D.—a strong wind blowing—caused us to change direction of chopper course to landing. We ran the Rockne film—with me as George Gipp.
