A meeting—Geo. S., John P., Don R. & myself re the Daniloff case. We are going to try to get him released to our Ambas. pending trial. We’ll offer the same here with their spy. If its possible we’ll do something of an exchange but only if they’ll release some dissidents like Sakharov etc. Once we have him back I propose we kick a half hundred of their U.N. KGB agents out of the country so there cant be a repeat of this hostage taking.
Went into a meeting of the joint cong. leadership—both parties. We first covered the agenda for the next few weeks & also discussed the anti drug crusade. Typically enough the Dem. leaders want to throw money at the problem.
The new Portuguese P.M. [Anibal Cavaco Silva] came by. We had a good meeting and I think our relations are on a good & sound basis.
A general Cab. meeting just to report on where we are re Daniloff, Nat. Security, Budget—etc. etc.
Then Don Fortiers family came by. A memorial service was held today. I couldn’t attend—security reasons—so his widow, small son, brother, parents & her parents came to the Oval Office. A haircut—a lot of desk work including a Birthday call to Alf Landon—99 yrs. Old. A long taping session and up to our quarters.
At 8:30 called Barry Goldwater to wish him well & pay tribute to his yrs. of service. He was at a farewell party for him & my call was on the P.A. system.
Another big load of homework—are vacations worth it?
