View the President's Schedule

This should have been a Monday—it was not one of the better days. A meeting with the Repub. leadership—House & Sen. Learned the Demos. are sabotaging our budget. Professing to cut even more than we are—by $2 Bil.—they are actually putting in cuts they know will have to be repealed—like closing 10,000 post offices. One nifty in the nutrition program was cancellation of “suppers.” But they included this language—“lunch can be served at supper time.” I believe our only hope is a total substitute budget offered on the floor of the House. Today was Press Conference. I dont think I was very scintillating.

Presented a gold medal to the Canadian Amb. (Taylor) who rescued our 6 hostages in Iran. A reception for the 11 Sens., & wives who were formerly Governors of their states.

It’s lonely. Nancy is in N.Y. for the Royal Ballet. I dont like it here by myself.

We have just learned that Israel & the previous Admin. did communicate about Iraq & the nuclear threat & the U.S. agreed it was a threat. There was never a mention of this to us by the outgoing admin. Amb. Lewis cabled word to us after the Israeli attack on Iraq & now we find there was a stack of cables & memos tucked away in St. Dept. files.
