A short day in Wash. but a long one overall. Met Capitol pages who have just graduated from high school while serving as pages. A good cabinet meeting— reported on Europe trip. Then off to Houston Texas. Fund raising dinner for Bill Clements. It broke all records in the nation. 3500 at $1000 a plate. Jerry Ford, 3 former Dem. Govs. of Texas, 2 Govs. from Mexico & M/Sgt. Benavides, our Cong. Medal of Honor winner. I had to do some fast shuffling on my speech as Jerry Ford did in his a whole set of figures I was going to use. The evening was a big success. Going to Texas can be good for the morale. Had some new figures— our task force on fraud has saved $5.8 bil. in 6 mos.
