The usual staff meetings then a briefing for something I’ve wanted to do. Last time was in 1983. The CloseUp Foundation brought 129 high school students here from 10 states from Maine to Wash. I did a half hour Q&A including 2 phone in Q’s. I enjoyed it & we’re going to do more of these.

After lunch Sen. Chick Hecht came by to tell me he was going to vote with me on the veto of the Saudi Arms resolution. This is something of course for a man of Hebrew faith to do. He said his brother & brother in law were in yesterdays meeting with me & before leaving Wash. last night both told him he had to support me.

Sec. Shultz regular meeting. He’s planning a trip to the Middle East & then on to the A.S.E.A.N. meeting. He hopes to get Israel & Egypt to settle the Taba issue.

Nancy came down for a signing of the proclamation calling attention to the risk of skin cancer from too much sun.

Then a photo session with about 60 top donors to tonites House, Sen. dinner. From there out on the W.H. lawn a brief greeting with the V.P. & Nancy to about 500 of tonites donors.

And then the big dinner at the convention center—4,000 present—the 3rd straight record for fund raising—$7 mil. It was really a nice evening & everything went well.
