Why Teach Civil Discourse?
In a democratic society, engaging in civil discourse is critical. The foundation of our democratic society rests on the ability and willingness of the citizens to listen to diverse perspectives and engage in civil discourse.
In a commencement address at Eureka College, President Reagan told the audience,
"Peace is not the absence of conflict, but the ability to cope by peaceful means."
In today's digital world dominated by social media, instant communication and emojis as a means of expression, these essential skills have become underdeveloped. As a result, we may struggle to engage in meaningful discussions that require patience, active listening, and the ability to articulate reasoned arguments and viewpoints.

Inspire and Instruct with Excellence
The classroom provides an ideal opportunity for practicing civil discourse. We know the classroom can be a structured and safe environment for students to build respectful relationships with their peers and practice expressing their ideas without fear of conflict.
We offer educators professional learning opportunities and curriculum resources to inspire and instruct with excellence. Through programs like the Ronald Reagan Oratory Competition and the Ronald Reagan Debate Series, students develop critical public speaking and debate skills, focusing on logic, civility, and storytelling, while honoring President Reagan’s legacy.
