Found out today—a C.E.O of a large corp. phoned Andrew’s new employer and asked him how much in debt was Andrews after his year of unemployment. The answer was $3000. He sent over a cashier’s check for $3000 to pay the bills. Gave out medals today to teenagers for service & for heroism in 1980 & one for 1981. Choked up on one—an 18 year old went down a pipe into a tank to try & save 2 paramedics who had passed out from noxious fumes. I had to give the medal to his parents—he died in the attempt. Also addressed ambassadors of Org. of Am. States & Regular Ambas’s. of Central Am. & Caribbean states. Wanted to assure them we’d try again in Jan. to get the C.B.I. passed. Have learned they scored me a 10. Orfila Sec. Gen. of O.A.S. the meeting couldn’t have had a better effect on all of Latin Am. Panama Ambas. said it was most important event he has attended in 6 yrs. in Wash. Another Bud. meeting—there’ll be blood on the floor with this one we’re going to try and reform the Entitlement programs.
