Most of the day was taken up with Budget meetings. It’s that time of year. Another car bombing this time on our Embassy in Kuwait & 5 other places on the same day. Some of our employees—all Kuwaitis were killed. The same Iranian holy war group are taking credit. George S. will be back tomorrow. He’s been on quite a trip. There were 3 budget meetings—one in Export, Import, Bank. One on C.C.C. credits—the Dept. of Agr. wants 2 x as much as we think there should be in that budget. The third was on Defense. Cap has reduced a $321 Bil. budget down to $305. But we know whatever he brings in the Demos. & some of our Repubs. will want to reduce it. Had a preliminary meeting on State of the U. address due about Jan. 25—also what I’d say Jan. 29 if I declare my candidacy. Went over to O.M.B. & signed proclamation on Drunk & Drugged Driving Awareness Week. One couple present had lost 2 children in 2 separate Drunk driving accidents. A meeting with Mac Baldridge, Bill Brock, our staff & 4 Cong., Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, Carol Campbell & Jim Broyhill. All our best efforts haven’t kept foreign imports of textiles from wiping out about 400,000 jobs in our own textile industry. I think we’ll have an answer before the week is out. Did some tapings & now 8:15 P.M. down for the Xmas reception for Cong.
