A briefing on our guest. He’s been here 3 times before. He has big ec. problems we’re trying to help him with the I.M.F. He & I met for photos then a one on one in the Oval office—10 or 12 mins. Then into the Cabinet Room for the plenary. We had some answers for him & he seemed pleased. Then lunch in the Roosevelt Rm. More business & finally a political joke session which he really enjoyed. Departure statements in the Rose Garden. Press tried to yell Q’s at me about Iran—I ignored them.
In the afternoon a meeting with Repub. Governors—a dialogue—they’re a good bunch.
Followed the Govs. with the Eagles chair group for Feb. Eagle dinner—biggest of their fund raisers. Over to the East room for annual photo with Social aides. To the Blue Room with Nancy for Xmas tree photo & then after dinner the Cong. Ball.
The Ball was the usual—a big crowd—735 & dancing to Lionel Hampton who hurried back from Brazil just to do this party. I was surprised how many of the Reps. went out of their way to express support for me in the Iran mess.
