A brief staff time & then 9:15 A.M. Repub. Cong. Ldrshp. A vigorous debate on the deficit talks. I think we’re making progress in spite of Dem. games. Then out to a meeting in Oval O. with Defense minister of Italy Valerio Zanone. Good meeting, he’s responsible for Italy sending naval vessels into P. Gulf.

Brf. for interview then interview with 5 Bureau Chiefs. I guess OK. Lunch—then meeting with Shultz—subject—coming summit.

Over to E.O.B. to brief Ethnic, Minority, & Repub. leaders on Judge Ginsburg situation since his revelation that he smoked some pot when he was young.

Then off to Camp D. Trees are virtually all bare now.
