Don Rumsfeld came in—he will be our new envoy to Lebanon. That’s quite a sacrifice for him to make—a leave from his job as Pres. of Searle Corp. Another briefing on the Asia trip. Met with Conservative Repub. Sens. who are playing games trying to come up with amendments to the debt ceiling bill. We must have that bill or govt. checks will start bouncing. Lee Morgan & Dave Packard came by to further brief me for Asia. James Roosevelt, The Mayor of Oakland, Head of Harbor board etc. to tell me of their plans to restore the yacht “Potomac” once the Presidential Yacht for F.D.R. Oakland will make it a museum. Then a string of visitors—Congressmen who had pushed through the radio Marti bill. Joseph Jacobs winner of the Hoover engineering medal. Nat. Diabetes group for signing of proclamation. Nat. Industries for the blind—more than a score of blind people chosen by their states for their useful work etc. Leaders of International Baptist Movement—they’ve just returned from Japan & Korea. Korea is now 25% Christian. Finished day speaking to Reagan-Bush campaign reunion. A full house at Hilton & they’re as enthused as if the election were tomorrow.
