One of those days—a meeting with former Sen. Ed Brookes re the voting rights bill. Then my final meeting with King Hussein. In his final statement to the press he said “not in 25 years has he felt the friendship of the U.S. as he feels it now.” A working lunch on the budget, tax & economy again. The Congress has not only refused to make the additional cuts we’ve asked—they have proposed increased spending. They are continuing to press temporary spending bills without passing a budget. We went through 1981 without a budget—now we dont have one for 1982. If I veto “a continuing resolution” the govt. comes to a halt. They know this & they know I’ll veto an appropriation bill that is higher than I’ve asked for. Met with Archbishop Iakovas, Primate of the Greek Orthodox church in N. & S. Am. Cabinet Council meeting on Commerce & trade. We have big problems to solve re the Merchant Marine. A haircut & then to a lengthy meeting with Sens. & Reps. on the matter of decontrol of natural gas. It (the controls) is due to expire in 1985. We want to start phasing it out now. Meeting with Baker, Hatch & Thurmond on “Voting Rights” bill. I think it will come out all right. It has become a symbol to Black Am. even though it has largely fulfilled its purpose. Home finally.
