Our 2 morning meetings were combined & total discussion was on our attempt to negotiate with the Democrat Congress on the deficit. It isn’t going well—they are just stubborn that the answer must be a tax increase.
I phoned Capt. John Hunt who has returned to Am.—a Fla. hospital. He was wounded on his ship the “Sea Isle City”—hit by a silkworm missile. They are hopeful.
Then a lunch meeting with the cabinet—sought their help in getting Judge Ginsburg confirmed—also on the deficit.
At 1 P.M. over to F.B.I. for swearing in of Judge Sessions as Dir. of F.B.I. Back to W.H. & a farewell reception in Roosevelt room for Bill Brock. A haircut & at last an interview with David Frost—T.V. Very pleasant & he seemed quite pleased with it.
Upstairs—dinner with Nancy & a quiet evening.
