At 9:15 A.M. off to West Point after a quick 9 A.M. meeting with Howard for him to report on 1st meeting with Cong. Ldrshp. team on Budget Deficit. Not much to report as yet.
We flew into Stewart International Air Port. It has a runway & facility for Nat. Guard. About 500 of those plus familys out to greet us.
Then with Cap W. & Cong.man Ben Gilman we helicoptered to West Point. Cadets were in formation on the field when we arrived & about 5,000 friends & family in grandstands. Then they passed in review while I saluted each of the 56 units as they went by. It was a heartwarming display. After review we went to Supt’s home for reception. Then on to lunch with 4,400 cadets & my speech which was well received. I’ll remember this day for a long time. Back to W.H. about 3 P.M.
A phone call from Nancy in Phoenix where she’s closing down her mothers apt. Dr. Hutton called & said she’s getting along very well. I told Nancy I’d do a eulogy Sat.
