View the President's Schedule

Connie Mack wants me for Fla. again. I may have to try & offer a tape or something. The schedule looks like Fla. is impossible. I approved a replacement for Gary Bauer—Fran Marie Keel. We discussed a new Ambas. for Morocco—Mike Ussery. Discussed a transition team to get under way Nov. 9th. Word on a Whistle Blower bill. When it comes I’ll pocket veto & ask for a better one in Jan.

N.S.C.—Sakharov is coming to the U.S. for a visit. I’ll see him. He’s representing something called—“A Fund For The Survival of Humanity.” Colin P. reports on a N.Y. Times reporter who has done an article revealing terms of an N.S.S.D. I signed off on (& which is top secret) last week. John Negroponte reported on a valley in Peru that produces 40% of all the Cocaine in the world. D.E.A. wants us to double our mil. involvement & presence in Peru. Also increase our financial help from 10 to $20 mil. They suggest a survey team to go & work with Peru’s Nat. Guard. Then it was Marine 1 to Baltimore to address a fundraiser lunch for our Sen. Cand. Alan Keyes. First I did a photo-receiving line for about 100 people. The lunch was well attended. I spoke before lunch & then returned to W.H. for a late lunch in the study. Then a big “to do” with the World Champion L.A. Dodgers. First a series of photos with them in the Oval O.—Nancy with me. Then out to the Rose Garden for a ceremony. Back in Oval O. autographed some Baseballs—rcvd. a Dodger Jersey etc. Then the 6 umpires for the series came in—photos etc. Nancy then left—she’s on her way to Calif. I’ll meet her there tomorrow night.

An ec. meeting with Brady, Sprinkle, Dan Crippen, Ken D. & our Fed. Reserve chief. Talking about our recovery etc.—things look good. A short meeting with Shultz— [. . .]

Then over—whoops—1st a meeting with Howard Baker who reported on results of his campaigning for our candidates. Then over to East Wing for surprise to Col. Krulak. Marine band was present. I told him he’s being promoted to Brig. Gen. He & I then phoned his father who was a Lt. Gen. of Marines. The Col. is a Marine also. Then upstairs to pack for tomorrow’s trip. And another lonely night here without Nancy.

Oh I phoned Lou Cannon who is doing a campaign piece & wanted answers to a few Q’s.
