Al Simpson came by to see if he had my support. After 5 yrs. of trying (during which I’ve been on his side) the House finally passed his immigration bill. They have one or two amendments we could do without but even if the Sen. in conf. cannot get them out I’ll sign. It’s high time we regained control of our borders & his bill will do this.
Then a swearing in ceremony of Dr. Wm. R. Graham as Science Advisor to the Pres. He & his nice family were in & I think he’ll make a fine one. He is the 4th to hold the job since it was created.
Geo. B. & I had our usual Thurs. lunch.
Then I dropped by the Roosevelt Rm. to see 10 “Young Astronauts” off to Russia. They are just children—members of that nationwide youth org.
Cabinet meeting to give a report on Iceland. Then Jim Miller summed up the last days of Congress after which Mitch Daniels reported on the election campaigns & showed some of the T.V. spots I’ve done for candidates. Finally personnelle time—the Sen. has confirmed 19 of my appointments—Judges & Ambassadors.
Last event a reception—East Room to be presented with the new History of the White House authored by Dr. Seale. Nancy & I did a receiving line & then upstairs.
