A day in Cincinnati—a tour of Proctor & Gamble to see some Ivory soap being made. As always it’s fascinating to see Am. industry at work. Then I had lunch with a couple of hundred employees. After lunch our W.H. press corps came in & I answered several questions, delivered in their usual adversarial style, about Gorbachev & his French visit etc. I think the workers were amazed at this attitude and they gave me an ovation when I responded & then walked out.
After lunch we went on into town & I addressed a large meeting of business leaders—big & small under the auspices of the C. of C. I was well received. Mrs. Schott, owner of the “Reds” gave me a warm up jacket & cap. Then it was back to the W.H.
