N.S.C. on Central America. Things are looking much better in El Salvador which is probably why it’s no longer on the T.V. evening news or the front pages. We’ve trained more units & their army is in the field not the barracks. Nicaragua is also feeling the squeeze. Did a closed circuit teleconference with the G.O.P. Regional (North East) leaders. Had lunch (oval office) with Sandra Day O’Connor & John. Pvt. meeting with Geo. Shultz. These meetings are beneficial to both of us. The Lebanon Cease fire moved a little farther away as Assad (Syria) made 2 new demands which Gemayal just cannot accept. The New Jersey is almost there. Nancy & I did an hours taping with Merv Griffin. We’ll be the entire show Tues. night. Then downstairs—East Room for the swearing in of Barbara O’Connell on board of C.A.B. Down the hall to the St. Dining room for Nat. Aquarium Society Reception. This was the private group chaired by Mary Jane Wick & Mrs. Baldridge that organized & saved the Nat. Aquarium as a now privately funded inst. That ended the working day—except for the usual homework upstairs.
