Staff time began with Beryl Sprinkel resigning as Ec. Advisor. I couldn’t ask him to stay—he had family reasons & so it’s back to Ill. for him. Then Liz Dole came by & she is leaving the Cabinet in order to campaign for her husband.
N.S.C.—Gen. Powell reported on a successful Sting operation we brought off in the Mediterranean. A participant in 2 hijackings that took Am. lives was enticed to leave Beirut & go to Cyprus. There he was told of a Mr. Big in the drug business who had a money making plan for him was offshore on a luxury Yacht. He fell for it. The crew turned out to be our F.B.I. men & he’s now on his way to America to be charged for his crimes.
We also have another Kuwait convoy on it’s way through the Persian Gulf. Libya is sending planes to Iran by way of Turkey air space. We think they’re carrying mines.
S. Koreas Ruling Party Presidential Cand. Roh Tae Woo came by for a brief visit.
Then at 10:40 A.M. Nancy joined me & we went to the Library of Cong. for the swearing in of James Billington as Head Librarian replacing Boorstin who has resigned. The library has 532 miles of shelves.
Back to the W.H. for lunch then it was over to the Hilton to address the annual conference of the Nat. Alliance of Business. All went well.
Back to the W.H. for some desk time then a brief get together with the State V.P.’s & Presidents of all the state Jr. Chambers of Commerce. A photo session with Congressmen & Senators who had guests—Ms. Wheelchair America, Mrs. America etc. Then upstairs for a 30 min. photo session with Englands Norman Parkinson.
