It was a short night & a long day. The usual meeting with Don R. & the V.P. then the N.S.C. briefing. John P. was hesitant about the Daniloff deal without us holding out for more. Since it’s only a move pending the trials I reiterated my stand on getting him out of jail. Our Repub. Chmn. Frank Fahrenkopf came by, he wants Mermie to become his assistant but it needs me saying the same thing—which I did.
Then over to E.O.B. to address our wonderful volunteers from all over the nation who make up the Public/Private Partnerships. We’re going international. A meeting is scheduled in Paris to teach our Summit Partners how to involve their pvt. sectors.
Had lunch outdoors with the V.P.
At 2 P.M. a lengthy cabinet meeting going over our proposed legislation for the Anti-Drug crusade. The Sen. says it will wait to see what we come up with before going ahead with a bill of their own.
I think we’re all agreed on a pretty sound program. Then some photos—one with a Cuban just released from Castros prison & his wife. He’d been in there for 25 yrs. & 45 days. I posed for a cover of First Monday—the Repub. Nat. Comm. magazine. Another pic. with Ana Maria Perera who founded Cuban Women in support of me. Rcv’d a report from our Oversight (Intelligence) Board. Then several photos with departing staff members and finally a photo with Nancy to promote our Sunday T.V. appearance.
