On my way to Calif. via North Platte Neb. Nancy by separate plane to Calif. by way of Phoenix Ariz. Met in N.P. by the Gov. Kay Orr, Cong.woman Virginia Smith. Had Cong.man Hal Daub & Sen. Carnes with me. First stop was ranch of Mr. & Mrs. Long. Visited his 100 yr. old Log cabin which is his studio. He presented me with a fine bronze sculpture of Buffalo Bill Cody on horseback. Then out in his yard to a picnic for about 300 govt. officials & leading citizens. After lunch Virginia presented me & I made a speech on where we go in these next 17 months. Then on to the Bill Cody fairgrounds where I spoke to 12,600 citizens—same subject & very warmly received.

The Dem. Congressional Campaign Committee had taken out full page ads in the local press & spot ads on radio & T.V. charging me with responsibility for the budget deficit. I called attention to those ads & explained how only Congress can spend money & the deficits are theirs.

Then on to Calif. & the ranch—a beautiful afternoon. Got into ranch clothes & then at 5:25 met Nancys helicopter. Settled in & ready for a few weeks of riding & ranch work.
