A message from Somalia that Maureens visit to head of state was the best high level meeting they’ve ever experienced.
Our Bud. schedule—all set. Don & I lunch at 1 P.M. in the W.H. with Pete D. & Bill Gray. But 1st I met with Repub. Ldrship. House & Sen. I thought perhaps I should throw my hat in first. It was a little edgy but the troops were divided—some were on my side. Pete D. warmed up when he began to realize I felt there were things we should wring out of the Demos. but that I wasn’t giving them a take it or leave it deal. The hostiles were the few who’ve always believed we should increase taxes.
About noon I stopped by the Dr’s. office. Nancys dermatologist cut a little bump off my nose. I think it was aggravated by the tape holding the tube in my nose at the hospital but it’s been evident for quite awhile although not as prominent as it became.
Then upstairs to the lunch. Things went very well although the basic problem is the Demos. just dont want to cut as deep as the Repubs.—which shouldn’t surprise anyone. The meeting ended on a good note and I believe they’ll come up with a compromise.
An early dinner—Nancy has to replace me at the Boy Scout Jamboree. Mermie & I will watch T.V.
