View the President's Schedule

Day started with a lot of talk about 1st the army Lt.—son of Colin Powell in a jeep accident in W. Germany. It is estimated his recovery will take a year. Then the Budget & how we must org. a campaign—in the Admin. & in the public. Then the trade bill & possibly our R’s. will give it a quick passage. An energy bill passed by House. If it comes to me I’ll have to veto.

N.S.C.—Marcos is back on the agenda. We have info. that he’s plotting a return to the Philippines and a coup to recover control. We cant permit that. Persian Gulf—Saudi Arabia has agreed to make A.W.A.C.S. coverage to us & tankers to re-fuel our planes. S.A. also said would make their mine sweepers available.

We have learned Cubans are flying the gunship helicopters in Nicaragua.

N.S.C.—was followed by a meeting again with Culvahouse. He says North will be publicly testifying July 7.

Lunch with V.P.—Oops! Before lunch a ceremony in the Rose Garden (90° temp) handing out Nat. Medals of Technology & Science.

Then N.S.P.G. meeting to explain to all the changes we’d made in N.S.C. and covert operations. A brief Personnelle meeting but prior to that a meeting with Dr. Mayberry who agreed to chair our commission on AIDS.

A long Admin. time—accepted Medal designed for bi-centennial of Const. Photo with leaders of Reserve Officers Assn. Rcvd. George C. Marshall biography. Met new head of Reuters News Svc. Lord McGregor & photo for Broadcasting Mag. A list of 5 who are leaving—photos. Then to East Room for reception, “Committee [Citizens] For The Republic.”

And finally upstairs to a lonely dinner—Nancy is in New Orleans.
