More talk about our budget campaign. It was also decided I wouldn’t call Bill Nelson on his interview after I left Melbourne yesterday in which he took a crack at me after being like an ally all day.

At 9:30 a meeting with Repub. Leadership of House & Sen. This too was mostly budget talk. I campaigned for our Repub. to get together & unite to make this issue a contest between the 2 parties & the people would be on our side. We finished with some talk about the Persian Gulf. We had some disagreement.

That meeting ended & we had some N.S.C. briefing in the Oval O. Frank isgoing to send me a summary of the argument between Commerce & Defense on denial of sales of some technology abroad that could help Soviets. In a number of cases—some items are for sale by a number of other countries.

Today was luncheon for Medal of Freedom recipients—some posthumous—Jus Dart, Danny Kaye.

Early afternoon I went to the Hilton and addressed about 3,000 of Nat. Fed. of Independent Bus. Got some standing ovations. They are totally behind our budget & tax position.

Back at the office a visit by Sponsors of Project 88—they put up $10,000 each every year. Then it was Cong. time—pictures with familys etc. One group was 2 x winner by local Fla. Chapter of Jr. College version of Phi Beta Kappa called Phi Theta Kappa. Some nice young people. High spot was when Sen. Ted Stevens brought Susan Butcher the 2 time winner of the annual Dog sled race in Alaska [Iditarod].

Learned that Parade Mag. feature Sun. of 2 stories—one by an American in Russia & a Russian in Am. Stories appeared in Parade here & Ogonyak mag. in Moscow were brought about by Charles Wick & U.S.I.A.
