Another warm day although for a time it looked like it could rain. Did my radio cast at the Oval O. Then back to W.H. for lunch & hours of reading in briefing books for summit. Rcvd. a confidential message from situation room around 2 P.M. In Ankara Turkey, P.M. Ozal addressing a meeting of his ruling “Motherland Party” was shot in the thumb. It was an assassination attempt by a man & woman posing as members of the press. He continued his speech even though police had opened fire wounding 16 people including the attackers.
