Howard B. called—he’s in Tenn. with Joy who has had more health problems. He’ll be here tonite. Ken D. & I held our morning meeting & it was mostly a re-hash of the trip. He thinks I should do some impromptu mixing with the people here as I did in Moscow.

Then Colin for N.S.C.—he was reporting on Geo. S. in the Middle East. He just cant move Shamir. He has King Hussein & Egypts Moubarak going for him but not the hold out. He’s also met with Pres. of Syria but no word on progress with our hostages who are held by the Hezbollah. Wife of one—Joan Sutherland is in Lebanon—has been there working her heart out for a couple of years. She’s made some top contacts. I hope we can help her get her husband out.

Then it was time for me to go address the World Gas Council—about 2700 from many countries including the Soviet U. They presented me with a gas barbeque. Back to the W.H. for lunch, some desk time, a haircut then a taping session. Called Duarte (Pres. of El Salvador) he’s at Walter Reed Hospital for Cancer surgery—prospects aren’t good.

Another sad phone call to Clarence Pendletons widow—a widow as of yesterday. He had a heart attack while riding an exercycle.

We’re still getting acolades for our trip.

Dennis & Mermie still here for dinner.
