A meeting with Sec. of Agri. Dick Lyng. Because of the law—we are spending $24 Bil. this year on the farm problem. One farmer is getting $12 mil. A number are getting a mil. or more. He confirmed what I’ve been saying—those parts of agri. not in the govt. programs are having no problems at all. We have to find an answer to this.
We had a short N.S.P.G. meeting about what we can do with the Soviets. It had to be called off before any decision—we’ll take it up next week. Then Nancy & I had lunch with Suzanne Massie who truly is a great authority on the Russian people & the Soviets. She’s convinced the govt. there is having real problems with Gorbachev & the old guard at odds. I believe this is true. I had to break away & go to the E.O.B. to speak to a group called our “grass roots supporters.” They are from all over the country & many are govt. officials—state & local or cand’s. for such offices 5 are recent converts to the Repub. party.
Then a signing ceremony for a bill that reforms the Govt. emp’s. pension system. A brief Personnel time with Bob Tuttle & off to Camp D.—where in the early evening there was a h--l of a thunder storm. Had a swim before that.
