Leaders of the Red Cross came in—the R.C. is broke—a victim of this wild winter & spring. So many floods, an earthquake in Calif.—the coastal storms & tornados all over—the Red Cross has used up all it’s funds. We called in the press & I told them we were starting a fundraising drive. This afternoon I taped a spot ad for use on T.V. Met with Gen. Rowny—he leaves in a week to resume the “Start” talks in Geneva. I’ve given him some needed flexibility. Lunched with the Shuttle Crew who take off the 7th on another space trip—1st time a woman has been a crew member. Dr. Sally Ride is a charming, likeable gal—wife of an astronaut who is due out on the 12th flight—this one is the 7th. Cab. meeting—no decisions but covered subjects having to do with equal rights for women, social security disability and Hospice care for terminally ill. Leaders of Jewish War Vets. came by—they are Vietnam vets. They are very supportive. Our mil. W.H. Chief Col. Millner (Marines) is leaving to do a hitch on Okinawa. I presented him with the Defense Superior Service Medal. Saw 4 Ambassadors off. Former N.H. Gov. Mel Thompson came by. An N.S.C. staffer (Navy Commander) also leaving to take command of a ship based in Japan. One of Rons former S.S. detail came by for a photo. Did a half hour of T.V. tapings & then an East Rm. reception for industrialists brought together by David Rockefeller. They are investors in Latin Am.
