A little office time & a short visit with Madame Prime Minister Milka Planinc of Yugoslavia. Even though their system is Communist there is a trend toward modifying & making it less rigid. She’s a sound, common sense person.
A short visit with former Sen. Howard Baker. He’s going to Japan & will be meeting with P.M. Nakasone. I gave him a letter to Yasu and we agreed he should tell the P.M. the protectionist fever is rising in our Cong.
Then it was off by helicopter to Malvern Pa. to make a tax speech at “Great Valley Comp. Center” (their silicon valley). Between 3 & 5000 were expected—12,000 showed up. It was a good day. I lunched with heads of several new businesses that are off & running. One in particular caught my attention, a young couple—Rachel & Jeffrey (she’s expecting in 5 months). Ten years ago she was a college grad. with aspirations to be a classical pianist. Then she was hit with tendonitis. Finally a family member urged her to sell brownies which she makes with her own recipe, to neighborhood grocers to at least get some spending money. The whole thing was a temporary stop gap. They now have a $2 mil. a year business & 40 employees & her brownies are a gourmet specialty.
Then it was Marine 1 to Camp David. Nancy & Ted Graber drove up & arrived about 3 min’s. after I did.
