Most of meeting was spent on Don Regan. Another falsehood corrected—book says I sent Geo. B. to ask Don to resign. George came to me & said he wanted to talk to Don & tell him he should go but wouldn’t do it if I was against it. I gave him permission to do it on his own.
Then we talked about games Sen. is playing with I.N.F. Tricks also by Dems. re the Trade Bill—they seem to be stalling about sending bill up for my veto. “Defense Authorization” is due up this week also.
Then a meeting with 4 Repub. Sen’s. Dole, Lugar, Simmons & Ted Stevens—this too was about I.N.F.
N.S.C. was brief report on Noriega—it’s looking better. Then our China visitor arrived—new Vice Premier “Tian.” A pleasant half hour—no major issues to discuss. A brief time at desk then Lord Carrington arrived. He’s top N.A.T.O. man—nearing end of his term. He’s done a great job. A quick photo—then over to Family Dining Rm. for lunch. It became a fun time—no serious business. Then I took him back to Oval O. His wife joined us & we went into Roosevelt room where I presented the Medal of Freedom to him.
Then it was time for meeting with Geo. S.—who is leaving tonight with Colin for Geneva. They’ll be trying to tie up some loose ends on I.N.F.
My regular session with Edmund Morris my biographer & over to the Library for a taping session, a sneeze shot with the Dr. & upstairs to exercise & shower.
