Mothers Day—but I had to go at 9 A.M. for Tuskegee U. in Alabama. I was commencement speaker. It was a wonderful experience. There is a spirit at that school. On the campus before the ceremony I uncovered a plaque to Gen. Daniel “Cappie” James the 1st & only (so far) Black 4 star Gen. in the Air Force. The ceremony is in the just dedicated science center bldg. named for him. I was interrupted 27 times in my talk by applause. Back at Maxwell Air base where A.F.1 landed we had lunch, then flew out to Pope Air Base in N.C. There I joined Bob Hope—(his birthday) where he was doing a show before 20,000 A.F. people & familys. We did a bit & then I took off for Wash.—arrived at W.H. at 6:20 P.M. P.S. Tuskegee gave me an honorary Dr. of Laws degree.
