Never got to this journal until today (Fri). Wed. things turned up. We got together with Sen. Pete Dominici’s Budget committee & worked out a compromise budget pckg. It passed out of committee by a straight 11 to 9 party line vote. It’s a good budget and will trim the projected deficits down to $106 bil. next year, $69 bil. in ’84 and $39 bil. in ’85. The Demos. are screaming & lying like bandits charging us with cutting Soc. Security—we aren’t touching Soc. Security. There is a ray of hope in the Falklands. The U.K. has lost a destroyer but now both sides are talking a cease fire. The only hitch is—it should be accompanied by a mutual withdrawal of forces & the Argentines dont want to do this. So far however the shooting has stopped. We’ve definitely regained the initiative on the domestic scene. Fri. met with John Towers Committee & some house members of the Armed Services Committee. Good meeting & I think we’re on track with the defense budget. This afternoon went horsebacking at Quantico with Bill Clark & Paul Laxalt.
