Staff meeting had to do with comments on statements re Soviet Arms deal by R.N. & Gen. Rowny.

N.S.C.—we discussed that same arms situation & the German position. They are concerned about giving up the short range missiles. But there’s no decision yet.

Then a meeting with a group of Repub. Congressmen about the forthcoming vote on the Gephardt amendment to the trade bill. It will pass but I think they’ll sustain my veto.

After lunch a joint meeting Ec. & Domestic policy councils. The subject was energy—oil and how to increase our domestic production & not be so dependant on Oil from the Middle East. Faced with 2 options I came down on the side of one that should make a real difference—using the mkt. & not a tax increase.

George S. meeting—subject Nuclear weapons & our allies. He also had a report on Israeli relations—visit by Arens.

Interview with biographer Edmund Morris. Desk time then met with some friends of Tommy Thomas. After which photos with the top 50 or so fundraisers for tonites dinner. Each of these had raised $50,000 or more. Then over to the main reception in the East room—about 350. Upstairs to dress & off to the “Presidents” dinner at the Convention Center—crowd of 3,500. A most successful evening—raised $6 1⁄2 mil. a new record for a single pol. event for either party.
