Up bright & early. Nancy & her girls off to Atlanta for more on the drug problem. Yesterdays sessions a great success. Met with a couple of Senators on the budget. Our Senate leadership is striving to get an up or down vote in the Sen. on the package—then if Sens. want to try for amendments let them—but get the package on approval. I’m not optimistic—too many are thinking about their ’86 election.
In the Rose Garden a ceremony recognizing Youth Volunteers. It was inspiring. Kids from all over the country who have created all kinds of charity programs to do everything from feeding the starving Ethiopians to helping street people etc. A good briefing on the Ec. Summit which begins next week in Bonn.
Then an award from the Nat. Troopers Coalition. These are law enforcement officers. Was interviewed by 6 foreign press—1 each from the other ec. summit nations. Then Admin. time—the Asthma poster child, a Fair Housing bill signing & a photo session with 4 Spanish press.
After some tapings—met Nancy on her return from Atlanta.
I called Pres. of Honduras. After news of Congress vote last night his military intercepted ammunition headed for the Contras & made noises about driving them out of their camps in Honduras. The Pres. was outraged, swore we must all continue helping the Contras & said he would order the Gen. (Logig) to deliver the ammo. I told him we weren’t licked yet.
