Opened the morning with House Repubs. same purpose—Nicaragua. Then ducked out & over to the Wash. Hilton to address 6100 delegates to Nat. Convention—Assn. of Realtors. This can really set you up—they’ve taken out full page ads in support of our budget plan. They are all out in support of us.
Back at the Oval O. a brief visit with the new Pres. of the European Community Jacques Delois. No deep discussions but talk of the need for trade talks & monetary problems. A Rose Garden ceremony to honor 3 Peace Corps Volunteers of the Year & see 47 new peace corps vols. who are off to Africa. Loretta Rupee had called for vols. & more than 20,000 responded.
I had a photo with a lovely young cow girl, Sherry Beadle who happens to be a well recognized Western Painter. She had presented me with a fine portrait of myself on horseback—painted on suede leather. Then over to the St. Dining Room for the 1st Arts & Humanities Awards—a luncheon. Then back to meeting with Congressmen—Dems. this time. It’s hard to tell how I did. Made some phone calls & upstairs. Later in the evening Don Regan called—my Nicaragua plan carried in the Sen. 53-46. Now I’ll sleep well. Whoops—forgot—closed afternoon with 1st of 3 Cab. meetings on our tax plan. I’m happy to say we dropped the idea of making part of charitable contributions non tax deductible.
