N.S.C.—mainly on Beirut. Our honored dead will be arriving at Andrews A.F. base tomorrow evening. Met with speechwriters on T.V. speech re Nicaragua & El Salvador. An N.S.P.G. meeting on middle east and George Shultz’s trip. I approved it. It’s time we tried to get our relationship back on track. George feels the same. Phil Habib has made great progress regarding Israeli withdrawal but there are still some sticking points. Had a press availability—announced George’s upcoming trip. A ceremony to swear in Ken Adelman—all his family there. He has 2 cute little girls—I got a kiss from each. A cabinet council meeting on a sticky trade problem with Japan. P.M. Nakasone is really trying to work out a better relationship but he has pol. pressures & an election coming up. We have pressures too though so we have to work something out with regard to machine tools. Finally a reception for Small Business Admin. Advisory Council. About 180 from all over the country.
