Marine 1 & A.F.1 now to Seattle, then to the ranch on the start to China. I’m writing this actually on Wed. nite. * I’ve just been notified that our Congressional delegation in Central Am. survived the crash of an army (U.S.) helicopter near the Honduran, El Salvador border. The craft was downed by ground fire from the Salvador side—which would mean Guerillas. Sens. Lawton Chiles & Bennett Johnston, staff & wife of Ambas. Negroponte all apparently alright & on their way to Palmerola Air Base in Honduras. We flew to Tacoma Wash. There I met execs. including Mr. Weyerhauser of the W. timber co. They are doing a lot of business selling lumber (raw logs) & paper pulp to China. I watched a ship being loaded with huge logs, did a little Q&A with some dock workers & participated in a business seminar. Then it was on to Calif. & the ranch. Met Nancy there about 5 P.M. We had 2 good days of riding & wood cutting etc. on Fri. & Sat. April 20th & 21st and then on Easter Sunday April 22nd left the ranch at 8:30 on Marine 1 down to Mugu for take off to Honolulu. That afternoon in Honolulu attended an Easter Svc. at the Episcopalian Cathedral. The Bishop got in some digs in his sermon at our defense buildup. It turns out he’s a marcher in peace & anti-nuke parades.
