A brief staff time then a briefing on the visit of P.M. Chirac of France. The weather turned on us. We were all set for the usual ceremony, the troops were all in formation—then the rain came down in buckets full. The troops retreated and we held the ceremony in the East room. We had a good meeting—in the Oval office not in the Cabinet room. Then to the Roosevelt room where I presented the P.M. with the 1st printed report on the Paris meeting of our several nations to learn about private initiative program such as we have. From there it was back to the East Room to report to the press that we have signed an agreement for joint research on AIDS.
Had some meetings with Sen’s. cancelled because of possibility they would be taking up matter of my veto of Highway bill.
Then a photo with Dave Abshires team which is now disbanding. A call from King of Spain who was being a father. His 19 yr. old son now a trainee in the Navy will be in Baltimore in May. The King asked if I could arrange for a visit with him. Of course I said yes. Then it was upstairs for a bit of desk work before getting ready for the State dinner.
St. Dinner lasted a while but was a really good one & the Chiracs had a good time.
