Just Howard—Geo. is back on the campaign trail & Ken is taking his little boy to the hospital for some kind of surgery.
Howard & I talked about chance to get Sen. Kassebaums Contra aid bill through Cong. (we have a fair chance) & same goes for upholding my veto of the Grove City bill. We face possible trouble from Cong. on I.N.F.—they might delay ratification til after Moscow summit just out of sheer orneriness.
N.S.C.—Colin gave us a map display of location of our troops in Honduras. They aren’t near the combat zone. He took up the subject of the $48 mil. Contra aid. There have been suggestions by some of our friends in Cong. that they should try for a bigger bill as a way of getting the $48 mil. Colin has met with Noriegas 2 pilots who defected & are in the U.S.
Then it was desk time. I put in a call to Pres. Azcona of Honduras & congratulated him on our joint operation. Then a photo with our hard working Advance Office Staff. At 12:00 an issues briefing lunch. Afterward a proclamation signing ceremony in the Roosevelt room. It proclaimed this as Afghanistan day.
Some more desk time—phone calls to nominate 2 Ambassadors, and 3 calls to congressmen soliciting support for my veto. Then a meeting with the Sens. & Reps. who went down to El Salvadore as witnesses of yesterdays election. The guerillas did their best to louse things up—death threats, shut off power in the entire country etc. A haircut, a taping session & upstairs to a lonely W.H. Nancy is in N.Y. Did my exercises & now Rex & I are in front of T.V.
