Ryan came by with a plan for distributing surplus left over from Inaugural. I dont think anyone has ever done [what] we’re doing with that $3 1⁄2 mil. $1 mil. will be given to the fund in the Treasury for reducing the Nat. debt. Then the rest is doled out to scores of worthy programs from one end of the country to the other.

Addressed a meeting & took Q’s. from Magazine Publishers Assn. at E.O.B. Then had most of afternoon free for desk work until late in day when a string of visitors came by. The first was the 14 yr. old Black lad I’d called when I heard of his heroic deed. He’d seen a man drag a little girl into an abandoned bldg. He ran to a house told them to call the police then he ran back to the bldg. picking up a stick on the way & held a 6&2"—220 lb. man at bay until the police came. He is 4&9". The man had been about to attack an 11 yr. old girl. Other visitors were some departing Marine Guards who have served out their W.H. assignment. Then a taping session for several events & finally another cocktail MX party with Sens. Exon, Pryor & Rockefeller. All 4 of us are ex-Gov’s.

Maureen is back from Vienna with astounding tales of the 3 day meeting preparing for the World Conf. on Women in Nairobi in July. Even here the Soviets were obstructionists.
