A little time in the office. Howard & Ken & I discussed again the Grove City bill. There is no doubt my veto will be overridden. I must present at the same time specifics on what needs correcting in the bill.
We have a problem concerning Sam Pierce & an appointment in N.Y. re his dept. Our Senators have mobilized in support of one candidate & Sam has a different choice. I have no choice but to give in to the Senators. Both candidates are top rate. Howard wants me to have a talk with former Sen. John Sherman Cooper. I’ve said yes. His subject is Nicaragua.
N.S.C.—Colin has called for an N.S.P.G. meeting tomorrow on Panama. Word came 2 of our mil. helicopters collided—17 dead. In Haiti there is some trouble mounting in the new govt. It has to do with drug indictments.
Then it was off to S. Bend & the ceremony over a stamp with Knute Rocknes pic. on it.
It was a wonderfully sentimental day. Film clips of the Rockne film. My speech was very well received. Then I left the meeting of 10,000—mainly students & met with about 150 special N.D. guests, was photod with N.D. football team—then the basketball team—they gave me a ball. I took Sec. of Agri. Dick Lyng & 5 congressmen with me—all N.D. graduates. Then home around 4 P.M. & in for the night.
