A short day thank Heaven because it was a short night. N.S.C. was about Jeanne Kirkpaticks need for guidance in the U.N. Security Council on a Lebanon resolution. She’s been battling the Soviets who want a resolution calling for the M.N.F. and the Israelis to leave Lebanon but no word about Syria leaving. I think we came together on some wording to correct that. Otherwise it would be—veto. A brief Budget meeting to clarify where we stand on spending cuts we’ve asked for compared to what Cong. gave us. Meeting with Trent Lott & his Whip group. They are Repub. Congressmen & women who’ve been very supportive. I think they left pleased with what we had to say about deficits. After lunch I went over to E.O.B. & spoke to the Nat. Alliance of Senior Citizens. This group is solidly with us. Back to a brief meeting with Dutch Foreign Minister Hans van den Block. We’re pressing for a stronger stand on our I.N.F. deployment. Geo. S. & I had a brief session on the Soviets & how to answer Chernenko’s letter. Over to the St. Dining Room to meet with our Winter Olympic team. This was a pleasant time with a bunch of great kids.
