A few more days like these last few & I’ll change my mind about running. Opened with Godfrey Sperlings annual breakfast in our St. dining room. About 50 assorted members of the press & one hour of Q’s. (I ate before I went down stairs). Most Q’s. on Beirut. Over to the East Room for crime prevention week ceremony. Rcv’d. report of United Way Fund drive. More money was given than ever in our history. George S. came in. He gave me a T shirt from Grenada—crossed flags & a line “Thank you America for saving Grenada.” He says they are selling like hot cakes. It seems Dick Stone (our roving Ambas. in Latin Am.) and Tony Motley cant get along—Dick is resigning. We’ll try to find another spot for him—he’s a good man. They both are. Meeting with Paul Volcker. I think we have him on course with money increase matching growth so as to keep the recovery going without a return to inflation. Maureen arranged a very successful fund raiser celebrating Susan B. Anthony day (1st time ever). It was carried by satellite to several other citys where fund raisers were being held. We had a good time. Nancys intro.of me brought down the house—“behind every successful woman—there stands a loyal hard working man.”
