New French Foreign Minister Dumas came by. He’s an improvement over Chaysson. It was just a get acquainted meeting. I told our people I wanted to use the renewed Sat. Radio talk to educate the people on such things as who really is responsible for the deficit & the budget etc. We’ll start doing that Sat. The Sen. Judiciary committee approved Ed Meese for A.G. & the Sen. will vote on it right after the recess. All Repubs. & 2 Dems. gave him a 12 to 6 win. A 90 min. N.S.C. meeting on the upcoming visit by Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd. This will have it’s touchy moments. An inspiring visit by about 30 leaders of new industries. These are the people capitalism is all about. We heard story after story of someone taking an idea to the bank—borrowing starting a new business & now their businesses have grown to several times what they were & all this in just the last few years. They are big supporters of our ec. plan.

A Cabinet meeting on our ec. report which I’ve sent to the Congress and on our continuing management improvements.

King Juan Carlos of Spain phoned to express his pleasure that we’ll be visiting Spain in May.
