A meeting with Repub. Cong. Ldrshp. I pitched a plan that they stand together so that even with the Dems. out voting us we can point out to the people how different Dems. & Repubs. are. I dont think they got the msg. In the House today only 26 Repubs. supported my veto of the Clean Water bill.
Word came that the Wall St. Journal reporter Gerald Seib arrested in Iran will be released tomorrow. I have my fingers crossed.
Over to E.O.B. to meet with the people of Chase Maryland who were so heroic in the Amtrak accident. Then an N.S.P.G. meeting on S.D.I. and how to handle further research in a looser interpretation of the A.B.M. treaty—which the Soviets are breaking all the time. On this one I dont think Geo. S. & Cap are as far apart as we thought.
Then a Domestic Policy Council meeting on Dr. Bowens plan for handling Catastrophic Illness. It’s a really complicated mess with a half dozen options but I think we made some headway. A sneeze shot & upstairs.
