A lazy in house day—I’m still doing practice runs on tonite’s announcement because it has to time out to exactly 4:41 mins. Maureen & Dennis are with us. This evening before dinner we went downstairs for photos of ourselves, the Bushes & our whole campaign org.—nat. & state chairmen et al. They then all went over to the Madison where they’ll watch the show. It’s hard to believe there would be anyone who isn’t sure I’m going to run—but I still haven’t said so outside the family. I’ll say it at 10:55 P.M. Earlier I phoned the widow of a M/Sgt. of Marines who was killed in Beirut. She is a remarkable lady—today was their 20th wedding anniversary. Tonite I went on Nat. T.V. for 4 min. & 41 seconds to announce I was a candidate & would seek re election. The response has been terrific—calls, wires etc. running 10 to 1 in our favor.
