We are seeking a qualified Senior Accountant to join our team. You will be working on-site in Simi Valley as part of a small finance department helping to support the month end close cycle. The department handles all accounting, report preparation, accounts payable and accounts receivable, audit, budget and tax reporting. This position will report to the Controller.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position will perform and/or assist in the following:
- Manage the weekly accounts payable process including collecting, obtaining, reviewing, and entering A/P invoices and expense reports for the entire organization. This includes checking the accuracy of figures, calculations, and other information submitted by other departmental employees and vendors. You will be responsible for ensuring invoices are paid on a timely basis. This includes following-up with individuals when needed for coding, invoice submission and general A/P policy and procedures clarification. This also includes performing administrative work such as sorting, filing, creating file folder labels, and maintaining the filing system.
- Prepares all cash and investment account reconciliations on a regular and timely basis. This includes posting all check deposits and incoming and outgoing ACH/Wire transfers, performing merchant statement reconciliations, researching and rectifying discrepancies, reviewing and responding to chargebacks, posting merchant/bank fees, and other tasks to reconcile multiple subledger cash accounts.
- Tracks certain recurring revenues and expenses and prepares monthly revenue and expense accruals.
- Prepares monthly reconciliations for certain asset and liability accounts. This includes following-up on individual items within those accounts to maintain accurate and timely accounting.
- Assists with annual audit compliance and tax return preparation. Analyze and reconcile various general ledger accounts in preparation for the annual audit. Works with auditors to answer questions and collect sample selections to complete fiscal year-end financial statements and Form 990 tax return.
- Preparation of monthly sales tax filings to ensure compliance with sales tax reporting within each state. Each state has different compliance regulations and deadlines. This includes the analysis of data to determine the amount of any tax liability within each state and involves perpetual research due to periodic changes in state regulations.
- Prepares reports for managerial review upon request. This includes expense, income, vendor, bequests, and miscellaneous ad hoc queries. Assists other departments whenever necessary with accounting related analysis and problem solving.
- Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to help improve, resolve and document accounting processes and practices including identifying opportunities for process improvements.
- Other duties as assigned. Foundation staff are often called upon to assist with events involving the public. These are generally after hours and require direct contact with the public and our special guests.
Qualifications and Requirements
The successful candidate will possess the following skills and traits:
- The successful candidate must be passionate about President Ronald Reagan’s legacy and principles; individual liberty, economic opportunity, global democracy and national pride.
- Have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field and have five years of progressive accounting experience.
- CPA strongly preferred.
- Have an in-depth knowledge of double entry bookkeeping, GAAP accounting standards and best practices.
- Have an understanding of financial systems and accounting architecture (i.e. know how subledgers relate to and interact with general ledgers).
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, including intermediate to advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, macros, IF statements, etc.).
- Must be resourceful and possess excellent problem-solving skills.
- Have a strong attention to detail and be highly organized.
- Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple simultaneous priorities.
- Good interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality with a strong sense of personal integrity.
- Eager to learn and participate in continuous improvement.
- Maintaining a positive attitude.
- Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays for special events, including the Reagan National Defense Forum held annually on the last weekend of November/first weekend of December.
